A new takeaway in Khar comes off as a mixed bag, with equal number of hits and misses
What is it about 'home-style' chicken dishes on most menus that make them taste unlike the gravies cooked in our homes? We aren't expecting maa ka haath ka khaana every time. But you'd think that it's simpler -- and more honest -- to just call it 'Chicken Curry' when that's pretty much what such dishes are.

The Kebab Guy thinks otherwise. The Khar joint offers Chicken Curry Home Style ('250), which we order apart from Chicken Mumtaz Tangdi ('220) and Mutton Galouti Kebab on Warqi Paratha ('300). The person taking our order tells us that the place is 'famous for its hummus'.
We start with the hummus ('210) and if this had not been a takeaway-only place, we would have had the dish sent back. The hummus tastes like it's been in the fridge longer than it should have and the accompanying pita bread is sized more for Tom Thumb than a full-grown adult. In short, we take two bites and put the lid of the plastic container permanently back on.
The galouti kebab disappoints as well since it's as dry as British humour from a 1980s TV show. But the Mumtaz Tangdi gives us hope. It consists of two chicken thighs stuffed with spiced minced chicken and cooked on a tandoor, with the stuffing adding flavour to the meat apart from holding its own.
Does that hope extend to the Chicken Curry Home Style, though? We are afraid not. The tomato-based curry itself is perfectly palatable. The chicken, too, falls off the bone. It's just that once it's given the 'home-style' tag, it's not worth writing home about anymore.
