Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh promises to investigate role of top politicians in land grabbing racket in the city

Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has promised to investigate the alleged involvement of top politicians and power brokers in the land grabbing case in the city.

PIL at Bombay HC

Dr Mehta had filed a PIL at the Bombay High Court, alleging that top politicians like the chief minister, revenue minister, Pune's guardian minister, divisional commissioner, collector of Pune and the superintendent of police were involved in land grabbing in Maval, Mulshi and Shirur talukas.

Asked for evidence

In the letter to Singh, Dr Mehta has also mentioned that low-rung officers had misled the commissioner in the case, which the chief of police has taken rather seriously.

In response, the commissioner has asked Dr Mehta to provide paper evidences in order to carry out an "in-depth" investigation and has also summoned a senior police official to get to the bottom of the matter.

According to Amit Kumar Bhowmik, the lawyer representing Dr Mehta, during the hearing of this case on April 2, Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar was upset with police officers representing the commissioner for not having updated information on the case.

Earlier order

Earlier a division bench comprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and D Y Chandrachud passed an order, directing the Pune police commissioner to file a personal affidavit explaining the nature of the action taken on Dr Mehta's complaint of October 12, 2007.

In response, Singh in his affidavit to the High Court clarified that the allegations pertain to a time when he was not the commissioner of Pune, and promised to take necessary action.

In April last year, Pune advocate, Dinesh Gonjare had filed a PIL against land mafias in Pune and its surrounding areas, like Maval, Shirur and Mulshi, which had direct support from the bureaucrats, police and politicians.

Gonjare annexed copies from media reports, as well as other documents, to support his contentions.
