Lakhs of students who are gearing up for the Herculean task of admission to first year junior college (FYJC) have reason to smile. This year, they will not have to wait to receive their mark sheets before they submit their applications — in a bid to speed up the process, the state education department has ordered colleges to accept the downloaded versions of mark sheets as soon as results are declared online on June 13, so that admissions can be completed as soon as possible.

They have also issued a circular to schools and junior colleges to complete the admission of their inhouse students and to their minority quota within 10 days from the declaration of results. It took almost 100 days for colleges to complete the online admission process to FYJC last year, and the department has issued the circular as part of its attempts to ensure that the debacle is not repeated this year.

While printouts of downloaded results will be accepted, school officials will be checking these against the original mark sheets before they finalise a student’s admission. The original mark sheets usually take time to reach the schools, and students this year will have to wait till June 23 to receive them, even though they will know their results online on Wednesday.

T Shiware, Principal of KPB Hinduja College, said, “Earlier, we used to wait for the students to submit their original mark sheets and only then start their online admission. This year, the education department is allowing students to submit printouts of their downloaded mark sheets. This will help save time and speed up the process.” Priyanka Rajani, principal of Vidya Nidhi High School and Junior College, said, “This time bifocal admissions have been kept offline, and so we expect less confusion. The students can avail of their results online, take printouts and submit them to us. This will drastically reduce time taken in admission. We expect to publish the merit list in three phases.”

N B Chauhan, assistant director of school education, said, “This time, to avoid the delay in admission procedure, the government has taken the decision to initiate admissions immediately after the results are declared online. Students can submit downloaded copies of their mark sheets. We have informed the colleges to finish their minority quota and in-house admissions within 10 days and surrender the remaining vacant seats to the departments to fill up. However, the finalisation of the admission should be done after verifying downloaded copies of results against the original mark sheets, which the students will receive within 10 days of the declaration of results.”u00a0
