The New Study Abroad Dream: Why Indian Students Are Looking Beyond Just a Degree

For a generation of Indian families, the study abroad dream had a simple script: get admission, get the visa, get the degree, and the rest would take care of itself. That script has quietly been rewritten. Aditi Banerjee, Co-Founder & CEO, Magic Billion, talks about how the study abroad journey is evolving from a degree-centric aspiration to an employability-driven investment.

Today, when I meet students and parents, the first question is rarely 'Which university?' It is 'What happens after?' 'Where will my child work?' 'Will the investment pay back?' 'Will the degree be recognised where the jobs are?' The dream has not shrunk-it has matured.

Over 1.2 million Indian students are studying abroad, but destination choices are increasingly driven by employability, work experience and return on investment rather than prestige alone. Families investing significant sums want confidence that education will translate into meaningful careers.

Employers have moved even faster than students. In my experience placing thousands of Indians with European employers, no employer has ever asked me for a candidate with the highest GPA. They ask for people who can solve problems, adapt to new technology, communicate across cultures and contribute from day one. A degree opens the door; skills decide what happens inside the room.

Through Magic Billion in India and IndiaWorks in Germany, we see this shift from both sides-the aspirations of Indian students and the workforce needs of European employers. The gap between the two has never been smaller. Europe is facing structural demographic decline while India continues to produce one of the world's largest cohorts of young talent. The challenge is no longer finding talent, but connecting talent with opportunity.

Germany illustrates this transformation particularly well. Its close collaboration between universities and industry, practical learning model, and strong demand for international talent make it one of the most attractive destinations for career-focused students. The country's continuing need for skilled workers demonstrates why education and employability can no longer be viewed separately.

The future of global education lies in collaboration between universities, employers and industry. Increasingly, internationally recognised education can be delivered closer to home, making global careers accessible to more students without requiring them to relocate immediately.

This thinking shaped our Global Degree Program with Steinbeis University, Germany-a fully accredited German bachelor's degree that students can pursue from India while benefiting from practical, project-based learning and strong links to international employers. It reflects what students consistently tell us they want: not just a degree, but a credible and affordable pathway to a global career.

The next decade won't be defined by where talent is born, but by how effectively countries connect talent with opportunity. Global education is no longer about crossing borders to earn a degree. It's about crossing borders to build a career. The institutions that understand this shift won't simply educate the next generation-they will help shape the future global workforce.
