Nusraat Faria
Popular Bangladeshi actress Nusraat Faria, who rose to fame after portraying former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the biopic Mujib: The Making of a Nation, was reportedly arrested at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport. If reports are to be believed, the actress has been apprehended in connection to an attempted murder case during severe protests against Sheikh Hasina that occurred in July 2024.
According to the Prothom Alo newspaper, the 31-year-old actress was arrested at the immigration checkpoint at the Dhaka airport while she was on her way to Thailand. The arrest warrant was issued after her name came up in connection with an attempted murder case dating back to 2024. The 31-year-old actress gained recognition for her role in the 2023 film based on the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mujib: The Making of a Nation. The movie, which starred Nusraat in a lead role, was directed by the late and highly acclaimed Indian director Shyam Benegal.
Before venturing into acting, the 31-year-old began her career as a radio jockey and presenter. She made her film debut with the 2015 Bangladesh-India co-production Aashiqui: True Love and has since appeared in several Bangladeshi and Indian films, mainly in Bengali. She is also active as a television host and model
Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who passed away at 89, leaves behind a prolific legacy spanning over seven decades. His last directorial project, Mujib (2023), a biopic on Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, marked a significant milestone in Indo-Bangladesh cinematic ties. Benegal's directorial journey began with Ankur (1974), a landmark film that helped launch Hindi parallel cinema and the Indian New Wave. His early films introduced talents like Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Smita Patil, shaping an alternative star system in Hindi cinema.
Throughout his career, Benegal worked across formats - shorts, documentaries, feature films, and television series - including the acclaimed Bharat Ek Khoj (1988) and Samvidhaan (2014).
