Diljit Dosanjh may have once drawn a line between being an artist and being a political voice, but his latest music video has fans wondering if he has found another way to comment on events around him. The singer has released the video for Devil, one of the tracks from his EP I'm an Artist Bro, and its imagery is hard to overlook.
The video opens with Diljit at the centre of a large gathering, surrounded by young protesters carrying placards such as "Save Our Future" and "Our Future, Our Fight". What follows is a familiar protest landscape, angry crowds, police personnel, confrontation and chaos.
The visuals have prompted viewers to draw parallels with the student protests earlier this year. However, the video does not name the movement or directly identify the events it depicts.
One of the most noticeable elements is the presence of members of the Sikh community among the protesters. This has further fuelled comparisons with the Jantar Mantar student protest, where members of the community had supported the protesting students with essentials and medical assistance.
The video then signs off with a cheeky "Don't try this at home", followed by the words "I'm an Artist Bro" a phrase that has taken on an entirely different resonance after Diljit's earlier comments.
Diljit had faced criticism earlier this year when he was asked about the CJP-led student protest during an Instagram Live session. At the time, he maintained that he was an artist rather than a politician and said he wanted to stay away from protests and political matters. His response attracted backlash, particularly from those who expected him to use his platform to support the students.
He later addressed the situation and backed students, saying the treatment was wrong and urging authorities to hear their demands. He also wrote, "The voice of the people is the voice of God."
Now, Devil has reopened that conversation without offering a straightforward explanation. Fans have been quick to interpret the video's protest imagery as a reference to the student movement, with some comments explicitly connecting the visuals to the earlier demonstrations.
Whether that was Diljit's intention remains unclear. What is certain is that the singer has left enough visual clues for audiences to form their own reading.
