Lalit Modi defends Sushmita Sen against gold digger label: 'I was like a kept boyfriend'

IPL founder Lalit Modi broke the internet in 2022 after he shared vacation pictures with Sushmita Sen and confirmed they were dating. The news raised eyebrows, with many calling the actress a gold digger. Years after their much-talked-about relationship made headlines, Lalit Modi has opened up about his bond with Sushmita Sen and strongly defended her against the "gold digger" label.

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, the businessman said, "Please understand that Sushmita is a very beautiful and very well-to-do lady. She has more diamonds than anybody I know on the planet, and she has earned them herself. She has diamond stores. So, she is a very wealthy lady. She has done it all on her own. There wasn't a single time that I went out with Sushmita that I had to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend."

"Sushmita is a remarkable lady and a self-made lady. She will never accept anything from anybody. So, when somebody says she was a gold digger, Lalit was a diamond digger. She was truly a diamond. She could have anybody on the planet she wanted. It was never about money. It was never about anything else. She can buy anything she wants, do anything she wants, without a doubt," he added.

Reflecting on their bond, Modi said, "Sushmita was very special to me. She helped me grow into many of the things I am today and was an extremely important part of my life at that time. It was a very special relationship."

Opening up about their split, Modi shared that the distance was too much for them, as her career was in India and his life was in London. Sushmita is currently dating model Rohman Shawl. However, they reunited after briefly parting ways, with the actress maintaining that they are just friends.
