Actor Rajpal Yadav has spoken out against people who he believes are trying to diminish his body of work and reputation because of his ongoing legal and financial troubles. The actor's comments come amid renewed attention on the cheque bounce case linked to a long-running loan dispute.
Rajpal said that his professional identity should not be reduced to his legal difficulties. Describing himself as a "student of cinema", the actor emphasised his dedication to the craft and his long-standing contribution to the Hindi film industry. He also questioned how people could judge an artist's entire career based on one aspect of his life.
The actor's remarks come after his conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases attracted significant attention. In July 2026, the Delhi High Court upheld his conviction and sentenced him to three months' simple imprisonment in each of seven cases, with the sentences directed to run concurrently.
The legal dispute dates back more than a decade and is connected to financing for Rajpal's directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. He had taken a loan of around Rs 5 crore for the film, which did not perform well commercially. Cheques issued towards repayment were subsequently dishonoured, leading to legal proceedings. Over the years, the amount involved reportedly increased to around Rs 9 crore.
Rajpal had surrendered at Tihar Jail in February this year in connection with the matter. He later spoke about the financial difficulties surrounding the case, claiming that the situation was more complicated than simply being able to repay Rs 5 crore. He also said that losses associated with Ata Pata Laapata had contributed to his financial problems.
Despite the controversy, Rajpal believes his work and relationship with audiences should not be overlooked. He pointed to the continued affection he receives from fans, saying he still gets approached for selfies at airports. The actor used this as an example of how audiences continue to recognise and appreciate him for his work.
Rajpal has been a familiar face in Hindi cinema for decades, particularly known for his comic performances in films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Phir Hera Pheri and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. His distinctive comic timing and supporting performances have made him a recognisable figure among Hindi film audiences.
While his legal troubles have continued to make headlines, Rajpal's latest comments underline his desire to separate those difficulties from his professional legacy. For the actor, the controversies surrounding his finances should not erase years of work, performances and the connection he has built with audiences.
His remarks come at a time when his cheque bounce case remains an important part of public discussion, but Rajpal appears determined to remind critics that an artist's career cannot be defined by a single chapter of his life.
