Actor Sanjay Dutt recently found himself making headlines after videos of him refusing to speak in Marathi at a Dahi Handi event went viral on the internet. Amid the debate online, a video of the actor speaking fluent Marathi has surfaced. The clip has caught the attention of social media users, leaving many confused.

In the recently surfaced video, the actor is seen interacting with paparazzi several years ago. The actor can be heard speaking to them in fluent Marathi. The clip has left several users curious, as many questioned why he chose not to speak the language when he was asked to do so at a recent Mumbai event.

The video has also added another layer to the recent event, as social media users are left debating if Dutt's refusal and response were simply a joke or if he could have addressed the gathering in Marathi and intentionally chose not to.

Sanjay Dutt's exchange comes at a time when there is a wider debate in Maharashtra. For the unversed, the state transport department recently issued a directive concerning Marathi language skills for autorickshaw drivers in Mumbai.

Sanjay Dutt refused to speak in Marathi at Dahi Handi event

The Dahi Handi video of Sanjay Dutt emerged after he attended an event on the occasion in Mumbai on Sunday, September 6, 2026. During his appearance, he shared the stage with Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. During the event, Sarnaik asked Sanjay Dutt to speak in Marathi.

Sarnaik can be seen telling the audience in Marathi, "These days, I am teaching everyone Marathi," before referring to the Maharashtra government's recent order requiring autorickshaw drivers in Mumbai to have a functional understanding of Marathi phrases.

He said, "So I thought after his entry, let us all get Sanjay Dutt to talk in Marathi. He speaks in Hindi, but all of us understand Marathi."

Dutt responded with a cheeky remark about his time in Yerawada jail. "Pratap bhai. Main 6 saal jail me raha, Yerawada mein. Tab bhi Marathi nahi seekh paaya. Main thoda seekha tha. (I was in the Yervada Jail for six years, and even there I didn't learn Marathi. I learnt a little)," the Dhurandhar actor said.

He then put his arm around Sarnaik and thanked him for inviting him to the event.
