'Always my dream': Singer Kshitij Tarey on turning composer with Sanjay Kapoor, Mouni Roy's Ab Hoga Hisaab

Few people know that Kshitij Tarey came to Mumbai to become a composer. Destiny had other plans, and soon he became the voice behind several enduring melodies. Today, the singer is going back to his original plan. Tarey has shaped the sound of Amazon MX Player's Ab Hoga Hisaab, composing its background score and original songs.

"It was always my dream to create songs and background scores. A few years ago, I decided to move into composing, and today directors trust my sound. Creatively, there is nothing more satisfying than starting with a director's brief and building a song or score from scratch," said Tarey.

The transition has also changed the way he approaches stories. According to him, having complete control over the songs and background score allows the music to breathe as one cohesive world. He reasoned, "[When you're doing both] you're so immersed in the story that you understand the series' sound. The score and songs start feeding off each other."

While Tarey voiced Taare in the Sanjay Kapoor and Mouni Roy-starrer, he turned to Shaan to lend his voice to Saiyaan Ve. To him, the choice was about the right fit. "This song had love, longing, and a Sufi touch. Shaan has a distinctive way of expressing emotions and I felt his emotional depth would work beautifully."
