Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan's upcoming film Udta Teer is facing roadblocks ahead of its release in Nepal. Amid the buzz created by its trailer, the country's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology refused to grant it permission for exhibition, and as a result, the film will not be screened publicly in Nepal for now. The decision comes after Nepal's Central Film Censor Board reviewed the film and found it in violation of a provision of the country's cinema law.
According to India Today, the ministry's Audio-Visual and Broadcasting Division issued a letter in which the Central Film Censor Board examined the film on Ashwin 19, 2083, according to the Nepali calendar. During the review, the board concluded that the film's production violated Section 8(3) of the National Cinema (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026. Based on its findings, the ministry has decided not to grant permission for the film's public screening in the country.
The ministry then sent the notice to National Cinema Group Nepal Pvt. Ltd., based in Aloknagar, Kathmandu. The letter dated 2083-06-30 in the Nepali calendar is signed by branch officer Vishal Bhandari and carries the subject line "Regarding permission for public exhibition."
The communication informs the company that the film will not be allowed to have a public release in Nepal. It referred to Section 8(3) of the Act as the basis for the decision, reiterating that the censor board found the film's production did not comply with the provision.
Notably, the authorities have not yet revealed what exactly prompted the decision to ban the film or what scene violated the provisions..
Udta Teer is a spy comedy about a Pakistani spy named Bilal Ahmad, played by Ayushmann, who enters India and suffers from memory loss following an accident. After losing his memory, he mistakenly starts believing he is an Indian spy.
The film marks the directorial debut of Akash A Kaushik. Udta Teer features Ayushmann, Sara, Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Suhail Nayyar, Gulshan Grover, Mukul Dev, Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Sandeep Anand, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Smita Tambe in key roles.
