Jeremy Renner has confirmed that he will not reprise his role as Hawkeye in Avengers: Doomsday, and he believes the superhero team could be in trouble without him. The actor made the revelation during a recent interview at Comic Con Liverpool, joking that Marvel's Avengers would probably lose their battle in the upcoming film because he was not called back.
"No, no, no, no. Not in that one," Renner said when asked if he would appear in Doomsday. "'Doomsday' I'm not in, so the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know⦠they didn't call me, so it's their fault. They're going to lose."
While Renner will sit out the next Avengers instalment, he expressed excitement about the theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame. The 2019 blockbuster has returned to cinemas ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to release on December 18.
Renner has played Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, across several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame. He has also made appearances in Thor and Captain America: Civil War.
Although he will not feature in Doomsday, the actor had previously expressed interest in returning to the Marvel universe. In a 2025 interview with Empire, Renner said he was open to reprising Hawkeye, whether for a second season of the character's standalone series or another Marvel project.
"I'm always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character," he said. "I'm sure we'll end up doing Season 2 [of âHawkeye'], and do other things. And I'm happy to do it. My body's getting ready for something like that. I don't know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights."
Renner's comments about returning to action roles also come after his recovery from a serious snowmobile accident in January 2023. The actor was hospitalised after being run over by a heavy snow-removal vehicle, sustaining multiple injuries, including several broken ribs, fractures to both legs, and injuries to his shoulder and collarbone.
In 2025, he said he had recovered "more than 150 per cent" from the accident and was prepared to perform his own stunts again.
While Renner's absence from Avengers: Doomsday means fans will not see Hawkeye in the upcoming film, his tongue-in-cheek prediction has added a playful twist to the conversation around the next chapter of the Marvel franchise. Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18, 2026.
