Ben Affleck has opened up about his difficult experience making Justice League, describing the DC film as the lowest point of his career. The actor, who played Batman in the 2017 superhero film, reflected on its troubled production and criticised the way Warner Bros. handled director Zack Snyder's departure.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Affleck said the film's problems were compounded by personal circumstances and the tragedy that led Snyder to step away during post-production. "The truth is, the experience of Justice League was so, so negative for lots of different reasons," Affleck said, adding that the production showed him what could go wrong when a studio and its filmmaker were at odds.
"You're really making a mistake. That was what really doomed that," he said. Justice League faced a major change after Snyder left the project following the death of his daughter by suicide. Joss Whedon subsequently took over, overseeing extensive reshoots that altered parts of the film.
Affleck was particularly critical of how Snyder's exit and the subsequent production were handled. "Boy, that was shitty. Him being taken off that movie, and the reshoots that we did, if you want the low point of my career, it was that," the actor said.
He also stressed that the personal tragedy surrounding Snyder's departure outweighed the professional difficulties, before questioning how the circumstances were used during the production. "Somebody's death by suicide, that eclipses everything," Affleck said. "And the way that was, I thought, frankly, used as an excuse⦠I just thought that was one of the shittiest things I've ever seen."
Affleck also spoke about the atmosphere surrounding the production, noting that he had heard accounts of other cast members' experiences, including those of Ray Fisher and Gal Gadot. "It was so gross," he said, describing the overall environment as deeply unpleasant.
The film's production troubles followed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which did not perform as Warner Bros. had hoped. The studio reportedly wanted Justice League to adopt a lighter tone and appeal to a broader audience, contributing to the creative tensions surrounding the project.
Despite bringing together DC's biggest superheroes, the theatrical version of Justice League became associated with behind-the-scenes conflict. Affleck's latest comments offer another glimpse into the difficulties that shaped the film and continue to influence how he remembers the experience.
