Long before celebrity plastic surgery became a topic of carefully curated Instagram confessions, Dolly Parton was talking about her boobs and laughing about it too. The country music icon, who passed away on August 25, has never shied away from discussing her procedures. But a question that has fascinated fans for decades is simple - why did Dolly Parton get breast enhancement surgery at the age of 22?

Dolly Parton's big glam vision

According to a 2005 interview with The Guardian, Parton had breast implants from the age of 22. At the time, she was a young singer finding her footing in the music industry and beginning to shape what would become the unmistakable Dolly Parton persona - big hair, dramatic makeup, rhinestones and, of course, a famously exaggerated figure.

The Jolene singer had spoken openly about wanting to create her own version of beauty. Her signature style was inspired by the glamorous, over-the-top women she admired growing up, particularly a woman from her hometown whom others looked down upon but Dolly thought was "amazingly beautiful".

So, enhancing her breasts wasn't something she appeared to view as a secret transformation or an attempt to fit into someone else's standards. It was part of building the Dolly Parton look she had envisioned for herself.

In a 1992 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Parton clarified that while she had undergone cosmetic surgery and had her breasts lifted, she had never had silicone injections. Years later, she told CBS News that after losing weight, she had them "pumped up and fixed up", joking that they stood "like brave little soldiers".

Dolly also seemed to agree that plastic surgery can contribute to happiness. "Ain't no shame in the boob job game, if that's what makes you happy," she explained to Southern Living.

One of her most famous lines came during her 2011 interview with The Guardian, when she said, "If something is bagging, sagging or dragging, I'll tuck it, suck it or pluck it."

That philosophy pretty much summed up Dolly's attitude. She never claimed her look was entirely natural, nor did she think she owed anyone an apology for changing it. For her, the breast enhancement she got at 22 was one early step towards creating the larger-than-life woman the world would eventually know and love.

Because if Dolly Parton was going to be a star, she was going to do it her way and apparently, with a little extra lift. The iconic singer planned for her unreleased song My Place In History to be released in 2046 on her 100th birthday.
