The world of cinema has lost one of its most enduring stars. Sir Sam Neill, best known for his unforgettable role as Dr Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78. The veteran New Zealand actor passed away in Sydney on Monday, surrounded by his family, according to a statement shared on his official Instagram account. While no cause of death was disclosed, Neill had recently revealed that he was cancer-free after battling stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer diagnosed in 2022.

Following news of his passing, heartfelt tributes flooded social media from across the world. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hailed him as one of the country's greatest talents, crediting him with helping shape New Zealand's film industry into a globally respected force. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remembered Neill for his warmth, wit and resilience, while filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, actor David Wenham and author Kathy Lette also honoured the late star's legacy.

Away from the cameras, Neill found joy at his Central Otago vineyard, Two Paddocks, where he often shared humorous updates about farm life with fans. In his 2023 memoir Did I Ever Tell You About This?, he spoke candidly about his cancer diagnosis, saying he wasn't afraid of death but hoped for "another decade or two" to watch his grandchildren grow.

A career that defined generations

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, the actor moved to New Zealand as a child and went on to become one of the country's greatest cinematic exports. His acting career spanned more than five decades and over 150 screen credits, ranging from acclaimed dramas to global blockbusters.

Neill first gained international recognition with My Brilliant Career, The Omen III and The Hunt for Red October, before cementing his legacy in 1993 with two career-defining performances, Jane Campion's Oscar-winning The Piano and Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. His portrayal of palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant turned him into a household name, a role he later reprised in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion.

Beyond the big screen, Neill also impressed audiences with memorable performances in Peaky Blinders, The Tudors, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Dead Calm, Event Horizon and The Dish, proving his remarkable versatility

Neill is survived by his four children and six grandchildren. His extraordinary body of work and unmistakable screen presence will continue to inspire generations of film lovers worldwide.
