Susan Sarandon and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder were among more than 100 people detained during a pro-Palestinian protest outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. The demonstration came hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to address the UN General Assembly, with protesters calling for an end to the war in Gaza.
More than 100 people, including Hollywood actors, public figures and local politicians, were detained outside the United Nations headquarters in New York City during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government's military campaign in Gaza.
The protest was organised by Jewish Voice for Peace just hours before Netanyahu was scheduled to address the UN General Assembly.
Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder were among those detained by the New York Police Department, reported the New York Post. The New York Post reported that Einbinder had also been marched away from the demonstration organised by Jewish Voice for Peace, where protesters held banners that read "Stop Arming Israel" and "End the Genocide." The protest also drew comedian Caleb Hearon, whistleblower Chelsea Manning, actor and model Indya Moore, author Glennon Doyle and activist Linda Sarsour.
Sarandon, whose movie hits also include The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dead Man Walking and The Witches of Eastwick, is no stranger to protests over Israel's war in Gaza. The US actor told journalists at the Venice Film Festival this month that she was losing work because of her outspoken views. "I've still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that's the power structure," she said. Meanwhile, Einbinder has previously said the cost of not speaking up about Palestine is greater than losing her Hollywood career.
Actress Hannah Einbinder scored the second major win for Hacks at the 77th edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards as she was honoured with the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award for her work in the series. The actress essays the role of Ava Daniels in Hacks. Her award speech was political, as she concluded with the statement, "Go Birds, f''' ICE, and free Palestine." While her expletive was censored during the live broadcast, it was audible to the live audience and uncut in online footage.
