Actress Shruti Sharma is all set to be a part of the much-awaited return of the iconic sitcom Office Office. The actress has bagged the role of veteran actor Pankaj Kapur's daughter in the new season and admits that taking up a character in such a beloved franchise came with its own set of challenges and responsibilities.
In an exclusive conversation with mid-day, Shruti opened up about entering the world of Office Office, adapting to comedy, and how the experience pushed her as an actor.
Calling the journey overwhelming, Shruti shared, "Honestly, it has been very overwhelming and it took me as an actor to first of all try my hand at comedy, pure comedy. I have tried many genres of acting, but performing completely pure comedy is a challenge in itself."
The actress revealed that stepping into a show associated with legendary performers added another layer of pressure. "Then, in the shoes of such legendary actors and trying to adjust their mannerisms while bringing the same concept with a new story in a different era it was challenging," she said.
According to Shruti, the reboot stays true to the spirit of the original while adapting to modern times. "Everything is new. The world is new, the people are new, the ways are new, but you're bringing that old sitcom format with a fresh cast and new stories. I think it was a challenge for everybody, including the production team and actors," she explained.
However, her role came with a unique demand. "For me, it was more difficult because everybody else was doing something subtle, while my character is constantly going through troubles. My job was to stay as poker-faced and neutral as I could so that people find it genuine and relatable and can laugh at it," she said.
Reflecting on the four-to-five-month shooting schedule, Shruti said the project became a major learning experience. "As an actor, I learned a lot during those months because comedy is very interesting. It looks easy, but when you have to perform 10 scenes a day where you are constantly arguing with people, you cannot drop your energy for even one second," she shared.
The actress also spoke about the demanding schedule that often saw her filming continuously while other cast members got occasional breaks. "The first part was always the office portion where I had to argue with everybody and teach them a lesson. Then we would shoot home sequences with Sucheta ma'am, who plays my aunt. Everybody used to get some off days in between, but I was shooting continuously, which was very demanding," she recalled.
Comparing the experience with television and web projects, Shruti said Office Office offered a unique combination of both formats. "I have done television where you shoot for 30 days, but sometimes you only have a couple of scenes. Even in web series, you might do one or two scenes a day. This was something different. It was like a combination of TV and a web series," she said.
Despite the challenges, the actress believes the experience has made her stronger. "I think I became more trained as an actor and I can take on more challenging roles now," she concluded.
With a fresh cast, contemporary stories and the classic humor that made the original a cult favorite, the return of Office Office promises to bring nostalgia and laughter to audiences once again.
