House of the Dragon Season 3 has ended on a haunting note, but eagle-eyed Game of Thrones fans may have spotted a striking callback hidden in Helaena Targaryen's final moments. Her suicide in the finale bears an uncanny resemblance to King Tommen Baratheon's death in Game of Thrones Season 6, from the window imagery to what happens immediately before it.
In the House of the Dragon Season 3 finale, Helaena takes her own life by jumping from a window in the Red Keep, falling onto the spikes below. The moment is devastating on its own, but the visual language makes it feel eerily familiar to Tommen's death in Game of Thrones. Tommen also quietly walks towards a window in the Red Keep before stepping out and falling to his death.
The resemblance was not lost on Phia Saban, who plays Helaena. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Saban herself pointed out the visual similarities between the two windows. The comparison has also been discussed in connection with showrunner Ryan Condal, with reports indicating that the thematic link was intentional, even if the windows are not necessarily meant to be literally the same location.
But the bigger parallel lies in what happens before both deaths. In Game of Thrones, Season 6's finale, "The Winds of Winter", opens its King's Landing climax with Cersei's devastating plan at the Great Sept of Baelor. The Sept is destroyed in a wildfire explosion, killing Margaery Tyrell, the High Sparrow, Loras Tyrell and several others. Tommen watches the explosion from the Red Keep. After learning that Margaery is dead, the young king silently walks to his window and jumps.
House of the Dragon essentially flips that emotional rhythm into its own Targaryen tragedy. Rhaenyra's actions against the High Septon and the Faith form part of the finale's increasingly brutal King's Landing storyline. She returns from the killing to discover that Helaena has died by suicide. Helaena's death therefore becomes another consequence of the increasingly ruthless world Rhaenyra is creating.
The parallel is particularly fitting because both deaths involve a royal child being crushed by the consequences of political violence happening around them.
Tommen is devastated after watching Cersei's destruction wipe out the people closest to him. Helaena, meanwhile, has spent the season imprisoned, traumatised and increasingly isolated while Rhaenyra's war closes in around her.
There is also a fascinating reversal. In Game of Thrones, Cersei's destruction of the Sept directly precedes Tommen's suicide. In House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra's violent confrontation with the Faith precedes Helaena's death.
Two queens. Two acts of political violence. Two devastated royal children. And, finally, two Red Keep windows.
It feels less like coincidence and more like House of the Dragon reminding viewers that in Westeros, history doesn't simply repeat itself; it rhymes.
