Prime Video has announced Quiz from God, a new Japanese Prime Original drama that reimagines the popular Korean mystery series of the same name. Starring Shotaro Mamiya in the lead, the series will premiere on Prime Video worldwide on December 4, 2026, across more than 240 countries and territories.
Mamiya plays Haruto Hatsushima, a brilliant forensic pathologist who was once a neurosurgeon. Known by some as a "genius chosen by God", Haruto is also considered an eccentric by his colleagues. After leaving the operating room for deeply personal reasons, he joins the National Forensic Autopsy Centre, where he attempts to uncover the truth behind deaths that initially appear impossible to explain.
Set in present-day Tokyo, Quiz from God follows Haruto as he examines a string of unusual deaths. His cases range from the mysterious death of a convicted kidnapper to an underground idol who dies during a performance amid an online controversy.
Other investigations involve a young person pulled into organised crime through illicit gig work, an unexplained death during a couple's first date at a movie theatre and the lonely death of a runaway youth. While the circumstances surrounding each case are different, Haruto discovers that the deaths may have something unexpected in common.
Hidden behind these mysteries are rare diseases that conventional medical methods fail to detect. For Haruto, each case becomes a puzzle concealed within death itself, a "Quiz from God" that he must solve.
However, the forensic pathologist is carrying a mystery of his own. Haruto is secretly battling an unexplained illness and constantly wonders how long his body will allow him to continue his work. His past also holds a secret that gradually adds another layer to his character.
Mamiya revealed that his connection with the project dates back almost a decade. He first heard about the role when he was in his early twenties and subsequently watched the original Korean series. He said the project eventually moved into production last autumn after "many twists and turns".
Directed by Shunki Hashizume, the series is based on the Korean drama created by Park Jae-bum and produced by Studio Dragon. The original starred Ryu Deok-hwan as medical examiner Han Jin-woo and ran for five seasons, including Quiz from God: Reboot.
Hashizume said he wanted to explore what makes someone a "genius" while allowing Haruto's more human side to emerge as the story progresses. He described Mamiya as an actor with "remarkable range" and credited him with bringing the character's different layers to life.
The Japanese adaptation retains the mystery-driven foundation of the original while shifting its world to contemporary Tokyo. Alongside the cases, the series aims to explore human behaviour, moral complexity and emotions that cannot simply be divided into right and wrong.
Quiz from God will stream exclusively on Prime Video from December 4.
