Dheeraj Dhoopar. Pics/By Special Arrangement
He is ego-friendly, has a hero complex, is overrated, and blatantly considers himself the Shah Rukh Khan of television. That's how the opening episode of Netflix's Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa introduces Dheeraj Dhoopar. But the actor isn't entering the reality show with a game plan built on drama. Before entering the house, Dhoopar spoke to mid-day about embracing the unknown, staying true to himself, and revealing personal secrets if the game demands it.
Excerpts from the interview.
What was going through your mind before and after signing the show?
When I met the team, they changed my perspective about a captive reality show. I've often been offered Bigg Boss, but I was always busy with my shoots. I could never be a part of it. This time, I was a bit apprehensive in the beginning. But I felt the premise was exciting. Plus, the show will introduce me to a new audience, and for the first time they'll get to know the person behind the actor. Though it's an opportunity to explore my personality, it's also new for me, so I don't know how my emotions will come out. I'm a little worried about that.
As part of your preparation, did you watch the first season?
No. I feel people who sign up as contestants usually have a strategy in mind. I, on the other hand, believe in humour. I want to be known for my funny bone; that's my personality. I like being happy, and I also know that the people locked inside aren't innately bad. There will be moments when I get angry or upset, but I'm not going to lose my humour.
But isn't drama what really draws the viewers in?
That can be one perspective, but I don't think like that. I take my own time to react to things. I won't be loud just to create drama, but if I get upset I will share my opinion, could get argumentative, and aggressive. But I'll handle it with a smile.
Why do you think inmates might eliminate you?
I feel I might not meet their expectations. After seeing me play different characters, for the first time they'll see me. They could be disappointed by some of my personality traits and nominate me. So, if I don't fit into their definition of Dheeraj Dhoopar, they may eliminate me.
Have you decided what secrets you will reveal to the audience and inmates?
That will depend on what's at stake. If I can save myself by doing tasks, I'll definitely give it my best. I do have my share of secrets, which I will reveal if it helps save me from elimination. Hope it keeps me safe.

Sabke pol unke mooh pe khul gaye. âLock Upp - Sach Ya Sazaa' doesn't hold back, and neither do its accusations. The inmates are confronted with exactly how the duniya sees them. Ram Kapoor is called out for his misogynistic remarks, while Pamela Sarena is dubbed the kaleshi. Two episodes in, one task, two fights, and tears have been spilt. The inmates are still finding their footing, while the reality TV regulars waste no time stirring the pot. Will the junta watch the madness unfold? Hell, yes!
