A 19-year-old college student died by suicide on Wednesday evening in Teesgaon Naka area of Kalyan East in Maharashtra and his father has alleged he took the extreme step after being assaulted in local train for not speaking Marathi, officials said on Thursday.

According to the complaint filed by his father, the student was allegedly beaten up by a few young men while travelling to his college in Mulund.

"He was pushed in the train, which led to an argument over speaking Hindi versus Marathi. He could not handle the pressure and simply said, ‘Thoda aage chalo na', after which the other passengers started questioning him about why he was not speaking in Marathi," his father alleged.

Following the assault, the boy, who had reportedly been under severe mental stress, took his life, the officials said.

After receiving the complaint, the Kolsewadi Police in Kalyan have begun an investigation into the matter.

"We have registered an ADR in the matter and are investigating the matter further," said a police official.
