The Kandivali Police in Mumbai on Thursday said that it arrested the man allegedly involved in the Mumbai Metro molestation case. The accused was held while on his way to his home town in West Bengal, officials said.
He was held by a team of police officials after conducting an extensive investigation involving CCTV footage and interstate coordination.
The incident was reported at Kandivali Police Station, where a case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to police, the incident occurred on May 29, 2026 when the girl was in a lift at a metro station.
Officials said an unidentified man allegedly took advantage of the situation when no one else was present inside the lift and committed an inappropriate act that caused distress to the girl.
Following a complaint by the victim's family, police immediately launched an investigation.
According to the investigators formed multiple teams and examined a large number of CCTV camera recordings from the metro station and surrounding areas.
Police reviewed more than 100 CCTV recordings and gathered intelligence regarding the suspect's movements and employment background.
During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect was employed in the construction sector and had recently travelled out of Mumbai.
Further probe revealed that the suspect had been travelling to his native village in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.
Based on information received from railway authorities and local police, a team tracked down the accused and arrested him.
The accused has been identified as Jony Ashok Sarkar, 40, a resident of Murshidabad district in West Bengal.
Police said that the accused has been taken into the custody and further legal proceedings are underway.
