The body of a 25-year-old man was on Thursday evening recovered from Kasheli creek in Thane district of Maharashtra, officials said, adding that a probe was underway to find out if it was a case of suicide.
According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), it was suspected that the man allegedly jumped into the creek.
It said that his body was recovered after an extensive search operation involving disaster management teams, police personnel and local fishermen.
According to officials, the incident was reported to the RDMC at around 1.42 pm on June 3.
The deceased was identified as a resident of Chandanwadi in Thane.
The officials said that man allegedly jumped into the creek from Kasheli Bridge on the Kasheli-Thane Road while travelling towards Thane.
Following the alert, personnel from Narpoli Police Station, the Regional Disaster Management Cell, Thane Disaster Response Force, Thane Fire Brigade and Bhiwandi Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and launched a search operation.
Emergency vehicles, rescue teams and specialised personnel were deployed to locate the missing man in the creek.
On June 4, search operations resumed with the assistance of local fishermen using a boat to search the creek area.
After nearly four hours of searching, rescue teams located the body in Kasheli Creek.
Officials from Kapurbawdi Police Station, the Thane Fire Brigade and the Disaster Management Cell, along with local fishermen, worked together to retrieve the body from the water.
After recovery, the body was handed over to Kapurbawdi Police personnel.
The deceased was subsequently taken to the District Government Hospital in Thane for further legal and medical procedures in the presence of police officials.
The officials said that they were carrying out the necessary investigation and formalities in connection with the incident.
In an another incident, last month, a large-scale search operation was carried out in Thane after a person reportedly fell into the creek at Mithbandar, an official had earlier said.
According to officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), the incident was reported on May 16, 2026.
Following the incident, disaster management officials, Kopri police personnel, the Thane Disaster Response Force and the Thane Fire Brigade had rushed to the spot to launch a search and rescue operation, the RDMC said.
