A 33-year-old private tutor has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting and molesting a 17-year-old female student preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Mumbai, reported the PTI.
According to an official from the Shahu Nagar police station, the alleged harassment began in June when the accused approached the teenager while she was studying alone in a classroom at her coaching centre.
The teacher allegedly attempted to force a romantic relationship on the student, proposed marriage, grabbed her hand, and behaved inappropriately, the official said, according to the PTI.
Terrified by the incident, the minor fled the premises.
The harassment continued into this month when the accused made another physical advance towards the student at the coaching facility, the police said, as per the PTI.
Unable to cope with the ongoing physical and mental trauma, the minor confided in her parents, who immediately reported the matter to the Shahu Nagar police.
Following the teenager's formal statement, police registered a case and arrested the tutor. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) covering sexual assault and molestation, alongside stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Further investigations into the incident are currently underway, the news agency reported.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, earlier this month, the Bangur Nagar Police in Mumbai launched an investigation after a 20-year-old woman alleged that she was repeatedly sexually assaulted by four acquaintances of her husband and an unidentified accomplice at her rented flat in Goregaon West, officials had said last Friday.
According to the complaint, the victim had been living with her husband - who works as a driver - in the Bhagat Singh Nagar area since July 25. Because of his long working hours, she was frequently left home alone during the daytime.
The victim stated that an unidentified man who had seen her returning home entered her house during the first week of July while she was sleeping and sexually assaulted her. Frightened by the incident, she did not immediately tell anyone.
Two days later, two acquaintances of her husband - identified in the complaint as Sultan and Ankush - arrived under the pretense of retrieving the landlord's belongings. Once inside, they allegedly locked the door, beat her when she resisted, and sexually assaulted her.
The following day, two more acquaintances - identified as Talib and Raja - allegedly entered the home while she was alone and assaulted her again. Intimidated by the suspects, the victim kept silent and did not inform her husband and parents or reached out to the Mumbai Police.
On August 17, the victim left the property citing health issues and moved back to her parents' house, where she eventually disclosed the ordeal. She subsequently filed a formal police complaint on August 19.
"An FIR has been registered at Bangur Nagar police station under Sections 64(1), 70(1), and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)," a police officer said.
"The facts of the case are being verified, and a detailed investigation is underway considering the seriousness of the matter," he said.
Police said that they are currently actively investigating the entire matter and the names of four suspects alongside the unidentified accomplice.
