Mumbai: 470 litres of adulterated branded milk destroyed; one arrested in Dahisar

Mumbai Police have arrested a man for allegedly adulterating branded milk with contaminated water and selling it to unsuspecting consumers in Dahisar, on Thursday.

According to the crime branch, the accused was caught during a raid conducted by unit 12 of the detection of crime branch at a premises in Dubey Chawl near Rajesh Compound in Dahisar East on Thursday morning.

Police said they had received specific information that the accused was cutting open sealed milk pouches of reputed brands, removing a portion of the milk, mixing it with contaminated water, and resealing the packets before distributing them to consumers.

During the raid, officials, along with food safety officers from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), allegedly seized 470 litres of adulterated milk valued at Rs 29,750, 327 empty branded milk pouches, equipment used for adulteration and resealing, and a mobile phone. The total value of the seized property is estimated at Rs 39,750. The adulterated milk was destroyed on the spot.

The seized milk packets reportedly bore the labels of Amul and Gokul brands.

A case has been registered at Dahisar Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with the Food Safety and Standards Rules and Regulations.

Police said further investigation is underway.

FDA seizes adulterated milk, dairy products, and sweets worth Rs 13.71 lakh

In a similar operation last month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized and destroyed adulterated milk, dairy products, and sweets worth Rs 13.71 lakh during a three-day enforcement drive across Pune and Solapur districts of Maharashtra, while also suspending the food licences of several establishments, including a hotel in Pune's Tathawade, for serious food safety violations.

The FDA carried out a special inspection drive under its 'Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra' campaign between June 25 and 27, seizing and destroying food products worth approximately Rs 13.71 lakh for alleged violations of food safety norms.

During the drive, officials inspected milk and dairy processing units as well as hotel establishments.

In Shirur taluka, the licence of Gagangiri Milk and Milk Products was suspended after suspected adulteration was detected. Authorities destroyed 12,278 litres of milk during the inspection.
