Mumbai Police have arrested five persons for allegedly duping women with disabilities by promising government jobs in exchange for money.

According to a press note issued by the Goregaon Police, the accused targeted the women under the government's special recruitment drive. They allegedly promised to secure posts in various departments and demanded money for "processing" and "guarantees".

A Goregaon resident lodged a complaint stating that on January 29 around 8.40 pm, she was contacted by the accused, who claimed to have influence in government recruitment. They assured her a job under the disability quota and allegedly collected Rs 79,000 from her in instalments.

Investigations revealed that the same group similarly cheated four other women with disabilities between July 2023 and February 2026, collecting a total of Rs 7.9 lakh from them.

Police said they have recovered cash and valuables worth Rs 7.9 lakh from the accused.

The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at the Goregaon Police Station. They were produced before a court and remanded in police custody.

In the press note, police urged citizens not to fall prey to fraudulent job offers. "Verify all claims through official government channels only," the note stated.

Police have appealed to other victims to come forward and file a complaint to aid further investigation.

Mumbai Police bust fake railway job racket; four duped of Rs 22.45 lakh

Matunga Police have booked two Patna-based men for allegedly cheating four Mumbai residents of Rs 22.45 lakh in a fake Indian Railways recruitment racket.

The victims were issued forged appointment letters, railway ID cards and other documents, and were even made to undergo "training".

The complainant, a 49-year-old Matunga-based caterer, was approached in 2021 with promises of a Group D job - covering roles such as track maintainer, helper, pointsman, porter and hospital attendant - without examination, and was told to arrange Rs 6.23 lakh. Between October 2021 and November 2022, he transferred the amount in instalments to bank accounts provided by the accused and also paid cash.

Trusting the offer, he informed three former colleagues, who paid varying amounts. When promised postings failed to materialise, and the accused became unreachable, the victims approached the police on February 27.
