Three young men are feared drowned in separate incidents reported from a waterfall in Navi Mumbai and a dam in Thane district amid heavy rainfall, officials said.
Search operations have been launched to trace the missing persons after two men were swept away at Pandavkada waterfall in Kharghar and another disappeared in the water at Chikloli dam in Ambernath.
According to officials, Mohammad Mobshir Mohammad Shahid, 20, a resident of Taloja, went missing after he was caught in strong water currents at Pandavkada waterfall on Friday.
In another incident at the same location on Saturday, 19-year-old Shannon Gaspar Kini from Mumbai was swept away by the water flow, an official from the disaster management cell of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation said.
Officials said both men remain missing, and search teams are continuing efforts to trace them.
In the third incident, Vishwanath Kamble, 22, went missing after entering the water at Chikloli dam in Ambernath.
According to civic officials, Kamble had gone to the dam for a swim when he disappeared in the water body. Authorities launched a search operation, which continued till night, but he could not be located.
Officials said rescue efforts will continue as teams work to trace the missing persons. Authorities have urged people to avoid visiting waterfalls, dams and other water bodies during periods of heavy rainfall due to the risk of sudden rise in water levels and strong currents.
Meanwhile, continuous rainfall in Thane city led to multiple structural damage incidents, forcing authorities to evacuate several families as a precautionary measure.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation, a portion of a first-floor gallery of the 35-year-old Shantabai Gotawale Chawl on Ambedkar Road collapsed around 7:35 pm.
No injuries were reported in the incident. However, officials found the remaining structure unsafe.
"Out of the 11 flats in the chawl, residents living in three occupied flats were immediately instructed to vacate and move to safer temporary accommodations," a civic official said.
In another incident, a drain wall collapsed behind the Tathagata Gautam Buddha Society chawl in Pimpalpada, opposite the Civil Hospital.
To prevent any mishap, disaster management personnel evacuated four houses located close to the damaged wall and advised residents to temporarily move to safer locations.
Separately, a portion of a first-floor gallery collapsed at Avighna Society in Sector 19, Shahabaz Village, Navi Mumbai.
Officials said no casualties or injuries were reported in any of the structural damage incidents. Authorities continue to monitor vulnerable locations as heavy rainfall persists across the region.
