A scuffle allegedly broke out between protesters and activist of a political party in Dadar area of Mumbai on Friday while supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were returning from a protest at Shivaji Park.
Police intervened after an argument escalated, and those involved were dispersed from the area.
The incident followed a protest at Shivaji Park organised by CJP and other activists over their demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
According to people present at the spot, an argument broke out between activists of a political party and some protesters while they were moving from the protest area.
Some volunteers of the protest said that a group of activists was being escorted away by police when some protesters formed a human chain behind the police to prevent others from entering the area.
One volunteer alleged that during the exchange, an activist turned around, grabbed a police officer by the collar and threatened him. The volunteer claimed that the police then became angry and pulled the activist away from the main road.
These allegations could not be independently verified.
An eyewitness separately alleged that some activists were being escorted away after they had allegedly hit other protesters with sticks.
The witness claimed that several protesters were struck and that a 15-year-old boy was among those allegedly hit.
The allegations regarding the use of sticks and injuries were not independently verified.
Following the confrontation, police intervened and dispersed the people involved. The situation was later brought under control, with Mumbai Police confirming that the situation was peaceful.
The CJP protest at Shivaji Park saw a large gathering of activists and supporters on Friday. The group was demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
