Police step up security in Mazgaon after alleged egg-hurling incident (Pic/X@PTI)
Heavy police security was deployed in Mumbai's Mazgaon area after organisers of a Ganesh festival procession alleged that eggs were hurled at the procession during the arrival of the Ganesh idol.
Following the incident, police personnel were deployed in large numbers in the area to prevent any further escalation and maintain law and order, as per ANI.
The alleged egg-hurling incident occurred while the organisers were taking the Ganesh idol through the area as part of the arrival procession. The incident led to tension in the locality, prompting police to step up security measures.
Additional police personnel were stationed at strategic locations around Mazgaon, while officials monitored the situation to ensure that the procession and subsequent festival activities could continue peacefully, according to ANI.
The deployment of various security agencies comes as Mumbai gears up for the Ganesh festival. With Mumbai Police, along with civic authorities, increasing security arrangements across the city, their main focus remains to ensure that processions and celebrations are conducted peacefully.
The Bhuleshwar Ganesh idol collapse that claimed two lives has prompted a police probe into the construction and installation of the structure, with investigators yet to fix responsibility for the tragedy. Prima facie, faulty welding appears to be one of the reasons behind the collapse, with the structure allegedly held from behind by just one metal piece, DCP (Zone II) Ragasudha R told Mid-Day.
The investigation will focus on the supporting structure, welding points, and how the idol was secured. Statements of those involved in its fabrication and installation will also be examined. The police are also looking into the role of the artists and others involved in making and installing the idol.
Ragasudha R, DCP (Zone II), while briefing about the ongoing investigation, said, âWe are still investigating the case. There are many stories coming out regarding the artists and others. We will complete the investigation and then decide against whom the FIR should be registered'
Sanket Nevshe, 33, one of the two deceased in the Bhuleshwarcha Raja tragedy, headed the Bhuleshwar Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samiti as its secretary, following in the footsteps of his father, Jagannath Nevshe, a key pillar in making this mandal popular among locals since its establishment 63 years ago.
Two years ago, when Jagannath passed away, his son took over the responsibility of heading the committee. Mukesh Kothari, a Bhuleshwar resident, said, "I was not among those in the procession, but I ran to come here when I heard about the tragic incident. In the videos, we can clearly see that Nevshe had just gotten closer to the idol and was near the pandal just minutes before the fall."
