The driver of the lorry that crashed into a divider leading to early morning traffic jam at the Eastern Express Highway in Mumbai was following the Google Maps and the route had poor lighting, a senior Mumbai Police officer said on Friday.
The lorry met with an accident near the Ramabai Ambedkar Flyover during the early hours of Friday, causing traffic congestion in the area.
The incident took place at around 2 am on May 8, 2026 and was reported to Pant Nagar Police Station shortly afterwards.
Police officials said that no injuries were reported in the accident.
According to the police, the lorry climbed onto a road divider after the driver allegedly failed to notice it while navigating the route at night.
The impact caused the rear portion of the lorry to detach and fall several metres ahead of the vehicle, partially blocking traffic movement on the highway.
Lata Sutar, Senior Police Inspector, Pant Nagar Police Station said that the driver was following directions on Google Maps at the time of the incident.
She stated that poor lighting conditions on the stretch may have contributed to the driver missing the divider.
The police said that the driver was unable to clearly identify the road structure due to darkness in the area.
Traffic police personnel quickly reached the spot and managed congestion caused by the accident.
Officials from Pant Nagar Police Station coordinated with traffic authorities to remove the damaged vehicle and clear the affected section of the highway.
Normal traffic movement was later restored, officials said.
