A fire broke out in the electric meter room of a residential building in Maharashtra's Thane city on Monday, destroying 40 meters, civic officials said.
No person was injured in the blaze, which started at 4.08 am on the ground floor of the seven-storey 'Anand Vilha' building located in the Charai area, Thane's regional disaster management cell (RDMC) chief Yasin Tadvi said.
Residents of 40 flats rushed out to safety after the blaze erupted.
Fire personnel, RDMC staff and police rushed to the spot after being alerted.
A total of 40 electric meters were gutted in the fire, the official stated.
The fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading to the upper floors of the residential structure, and the blaze was doused by 4.40 am, he said.
A short-circuit in the electrical wiring is suspected to have triggered the fire, he said, adding that a probe was on to ascertain the exact cause of the blaze.
The building's power supply was temporarily disconnected as a precautionary measure during cooling operations.
In another incident, a fire broke out in the meter room of a residential building in Maharashtra's Thane city in the early hours of May 7, damaging 12 electricity meters, an official said.
No person was injured in the blaze, which erupted at 1.12 am in the meter room on the ground floor of the three-storey Sarika Apartment building located in the Pachpakhadi area, Thane regional disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said.
Smoke emanating from the meter room triggered panic among residents, prompting them to rush out of their homes as a precautionary measure.
After being alerted, fire personnel rushed to the spot.
The fire was confined to the meter box room and was extinguished by 1.35 am. The situation was brought under control swiftly, and no injuries were reported, Tadvi said.
Twelve electricity meters were damaged in the blaze, he said.
Residents returned to their apartments after nearly an hour once the area was declared safe by the fire brigade personnel, the official said.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he added.
