The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday carried out a major demolition drive in Amar Nagar and Khindipada, removing 150 unauthorised residential and commercial structures that were obstructing the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project, officials said.
The action was undertaken by the encroachment removal team of the T Ward office as part of efforts to facilitate the construction of the important east-west connectivity corridor.
The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs.
The 12.20-kilometre-long route will be completed in four phases and will include roads, underground tunnels and flyovers.
Officials said a total of 384 structures in Amar Nagar and Khindipada were affecting the project alignment.
Out of the 384 affected structures, around 150 unauthorised residential and commercial constructions were removed during Sunday's operation.
The remaining 234 structures are scheduled to be removed during the next phase of the drive, which is expected to take place next week.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of the Deputy Commissioner of Zone 6 and the leadership of the Assistant Commissioner of T Ward.
Around 10 municipal engineers and 100 civic staff members participated in the drive.
Authorities deployed two poclain machines, four JCB excavators and ten dumpers to carry out the demolition work.
To maintain law and order, around 50 police personnel were deployed under the supervision of Mulund Senior Police Inspector Ajay Joshi.
The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the eastern and western suburbs and ease traffic congestion across key parts of Mumbai.
Civic officials said that the removal of encroachments is necessary to ensure timely completion of the project.
The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project is being developed in four phases and is aimed at improving connectivity across eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai.
Under Phase 3 of the project, excavation of underground tunnels using tunnel boring machines is expected to begin in June 2026.
Before this work starts, residents from the Amar Nagar area will be relocated to the new housing complex in Kanjurmarg West.
The BMC stated that the rehabilitation initiative aims to provide affected citizens with secure housing along with essential civic infrastructure such as internal roads, open spaces and community facilities. The civic officials have been instructed to ensure that all amenities are completed on time so that residents can move into the new homes without delay.
