A donor's heart reached a Powai hospital in Mumbai from neighbouring Thane district in just 17 minutes through a well-coordinated green corridor and has gven hope to a critically ill patient, officials said on Friday.
They said that Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital in Powai successfully received a donor heart from Mahaveer Jain Hospital in Thane district in a record time of 17 minutes and it was made possible with a green corridor by the authorities in Mumbai and Thane.
The quick transportation has given new hope to a critically ill heart patient with a life-saving transplant, said the officials.
According to an official statement, the donor was a 38-year-old woman who was declared brain-dead after suffering a hypertensive cranial bleed. Following confirmation by a board of medical experts, her family took the brave decision to donate her organs.
Their act of compassion transformed personal loss into a chance at life for others, the statement said.
A specialised organ retrieval team was mobilised immediately. With close coordination between hospital authorities, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), and the Traffic Police, a green corridor was created to allow uninterrupted movement, officials said.
As a result, the donor heart reached Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital in just 17 minutes, ensuring minimal delay and maximum viability.
According to ZTCC norms, the heart was allocated to a 60-year-old male patient suffering from end-stage heart failure. The transplant surgery was underway at the time of reporting, the officials said.
Dr. Sameer Kulkarni, CEO of Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, highlighted the urgent need for more organ donors in India.
He stated that while over 18,000 organ transplants were performed in 2024, more than 80,000 patients are still waiting. India's organ donation rate remains below one donor per million population.
He expressed deep gratitude to the donor's family and praised the efforts of ZTCC and the Traffic Police in Thane and Mumbai for their critical role in making the transport quickly possible.
