IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai today, orange alert for heavy rain on Wednesday

IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Tuesday and an orange alert for Wednesday, forecasting heavy rainfall. The city recorded over 26 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, while the BMC has advised residents in low-lying coastal areas to remain alert due to high tides

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas. The weather forecasting agency has further predicted heavy rainfall on Wednesday, issuing an orange alert.

IMD further predicted that the city is likely to experience cloudy conditions with heavy rain. According to the latest weather bulletin issued by the IMD, Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 29.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.9 degrees Celsius.

The city in the last 24 hours received 26.03 mm of rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday. The Eastern Suburbs recorded 40.62 mm of rainfall, while the Western Suburbs recorded 22.47 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

As per the BMC, residents living in low-lying coastal areas have also been advised to remain alert due to high tide conditions.

Mumbai's Air Quality Remains Satisfactory

While weather conditions remained humid, Mumbai's air quality continued to stay within the "good" category on Sunday.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) SAMEER application, the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 45. An AQI between 51 and 100 falls under the satisfactory category, indicating that air quality is generally acceptable and poses minimal health concerns for most residents.

Elsewhere in Maharashtra, Bramhapuri in Vidarbha recorded the state's highest maximum temperature at 37.0 degrees Celsius, while Mahabaleshwar registered the lowest minimum temperature at 18.0 degrees Celsius, making it the coolest location in the state. Other cities recording high daytime temperatures included Jalgaon (36.4 degrees Celsius), Gondia (35.8 degrees Celsius), Chandrapur and Nagpur (35.6 degrees Celsius each), and Akola (35.3 degrees Celsius).

In Pune, the Shivajinagar observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.6 degrees Celsius, along with 11.8 mm of rainfall during the previous 24 hours. The IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy towards Tuesday afternoon or evening, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall very likely. The city's maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 31 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.
