The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Tuesday announced that it will conduct a detailed 'death audit' to study causes of mortality and improve healthcare services in the city.

NMMC Commissioner Kailash Shinde reviewed the civic body's health system and emphasised the need for structured and planned measures to improve the quality of care, reported the PTI.

He said services at all levels - from primary urban health centres to public hospitals - should be regularly assessed.

During a review of birth and death data over the past three years, the commissioner directed officials to analyse each death in detail.

The aim is to identify causes and contributing factors, and use the findings to improve treatment and reduce mortality rates in the future, the officials said, as per the PTI.

Monitoring of health centres

The civic body operates 26 primary urban health centres, and the commissioner instructed that data from these centres should be regularly verified at the headquarters level, according to the PTI.

This, he said, would help ensure accuracy and better decision-making.

The commissioner also called for expanded vaccination drives, screening programmes and health camps across the city.

He suggested involving local representatives to increase public participation and awareness.

Complete pre-monsoon works by May 15: NMMC chief

Meanwhile, last month, the NMMC Commissioner had directed all civic departments and allied agencies to complete ongoing pre-monsoon works by May 15 and ensure seamless coordination to avoid inconvenience to citizens during the rainy season.

The city civic chief had directed officials to expedite the desilting of nullahs and major drains and ensure that the silt removed is promptly lifted after drying.

"Leaving debris along drains can worsen flooding risks," he noted, calling for strict compliance.

With multiple infrastructure works underway, especially in MIDC areas, the civic body has been asked to prioritise pothole repairs, zebra crossings, and road signage.

Authorities were also told to jointly inspect landslide-prone areas and relocate residents from vulnerable spots if needed. Illegal settlements obstructing natural water channels must be removed urgently.

The commissioner made it clear that no new road excavation permissions should be granted unless absolutely necessary. All ongoing digging works must be completed and roads restored before May 15.
