A joyride in the wee hours of Saturday turned into a deadly carnage on Panvel-Uran Road when a speeding black SUV smashed into a container truck, leaving two young men dead and two others grievously injured.

CCTV footage of the crash, captured at around 1 am near Munda Bus Stop, shows the SUV hurtling down the road moments before it slammed with brutal force into the rear of a container truck. The impact was so severe that the SUV's entire front section was reduced to twisted metal.

Inside the vehicle were five youngsters. Two of them, both 22, Shrinath Mohan Chandrashekhar, resident of Meridian Society in sector-6, Nerul and Hitendra Sanjay Patil, a resident of Karave Gaon in Navi Mumbai suffered catastrophic injuries. Though they were rushed to hospital, doctors couldn't save them.

Two others survived but are battling severe injuries in hospital, while the fifth occupant escaped with minor injuries.

On the basis of a complaint from Mohan Chandrashekar, 50, the police have registered a case against Harsh Santosh Patil (21) the driver of the SUV. Panvel City Police have booked the driver under various acts of Bhāratīya Nyāya Sanhitā (BNS) for death caused by negligence and multiple sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The cause was reckless speeding and sheer negligence, stated an officer from Panvel City Police. The probe continues, but families of the deceased are shattered by the brutal cost of youthful recklessness meeting powerful vehicles.
