Maharashtra weather update: IMD issues red alert for Mumbai, adjoining districts amid heavy rain forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high-alert warning for extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several districts in Maharashtra on Sunday. According to the forecast, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad districts are very likely to witness intense weather activity, including lightning and gusty winds at isolated places. All four districts are currently under a red alert.

Additionally, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts have been placed under an orange alert, while Nashik, including the ghat areas of Nashik and Pune, have also been brought under a red alert due to the likelihood of extreme rainfall in the coming hours.

Between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm on Sunday, the city recorded moderate rainfall, with the Western Suburbs receiving the highest average at 53.61 mm, followed by the City region (47.47 mm) and the Eastern Suburbs (37.92 mm).

The heaviest rainfall during the 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm slot was observed in the Eastern Suburbs, particularly in Mulund, where the Fire Station reported 25 mm, LBS Marg Municipal School logged 22 mm, and Gavanpada Fire Station recorded 20 mm. Rainfall in the City and Western Suburbs remained light during that period.

According to officials, railway services are operating normally, and road traffic remains smooth across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has all its departments on high alert and deployed on the ground. The Storm Water Drainage Department has kept dewatering pumps operational 24/7 to address any potential waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas.

Traffic is reported to be flowing smoothly in traditionally flood-prone locations such as Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Chunabhatti, Malad underpass, Dahisar underpass, and Mankhurd underpass. So far, no major disruptions have been reported in either road or rail operations.

Mumbai rains: Colaba tops city rainfall with 120.8 mm in 24 hours

Between 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, several parts of Mumbai recorded significant rainfall, with Colaba receiving the highest at 120.8 mm, crossing the 100 mm mark in just 24 hours.

Other notable readings include Juhu at 88.0 mm, Santacruz at 83.8 mm, Bandra at 82.5 mm, and Mahalaxmi at 28.0 mm. Due to waterlogging from the intense rain, the Andheri subway has been closed to traffic as a precautionary measure.
