After months of being impeded by the gate of a housing society on Nesbit Road in Mazgaon, which would block the footpath entirely when opened, pedestrians can now walk freely on the stretch, as the issue was resolved after mid-day shed light on it.

Locals were particularly concerned about the issue, as a play school is located near the society, and children had to venture onto the road to access their respective modes of transport. The spot is also near a busy junction, where trucks and other heavy vehicles pass through toward Byculla.

Days after mid-day shed light on the matter, change was seen, with the society ensuring that the gate opened inwards, allowing pedestrians of all ages to walk on the footpath comfortably.

‘I'm glad'

Cherag Driver, 80, a Mazagaon resident who alerted mid-day to the issue, said, "Senior citizens and kids had to walk on the road, where vehicles are sometimes parked, which means you need to get on the road to cross a 10-metre stretch." Driver, who noticed that the issue had been resolved last Saturday, said, "It is a relief that the society has taken action. I just hope that nothing changes." He had told mid-day that when he had complained to the society, they acted for a day but after that the gate was still seen blocking the pavement as usual.

‘We are happy'

A local fruit vendor, requesting anonymity, said, "We used to keep an eye on the gate, especially when children would emerge from the playschool. Now that the issue has been solved, it is a great relief." He added, "The traffic police used to deal with complaints daily. I am sure they are also relieved that the issue has been sorted by the society itself."
