A 10-year-old boy drowned in a private lake in Andheri West, Mumbai, on Monday afternoon. His body was recovered by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) after an extensive search operation
According to information received by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident occurred around 1.15 pm at Wireless Compound in Juhu Gully, located at DN Nagar behind the Jagrut Hanuman Temple.
Two to three children from a nearby slum had gone swimming in the lake, which is located on private property. During the outing, one of the boys drowned, the information released by BMC said.
The missing child was identified as Dinesh Basawraj Harijan, according to Assistant Police Inspector (API) Nagre.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) launched a search operation immediately after receiving information about the incident.
Police personnel and a 108 ambulance were deployed at the spot.
According to an update from the Mumbai Fire Brigade at 5.50 pm, the child's body was retrieved from the lake by NDRF at 4.52 pm.
The child was rushed to Cooper Hospital for medical examination, where he was declared brough dead.
Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR), and further investigation into the incident is underway.
In a separate incident earlier, two 19-year-old men died after drowning in a quarry in Mumbai's Dahisar East area on the morning of July 11, according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).
The incident was reported to the MFB Control Room at 10.26 am. According to the MFB, the incident occurred at Shaikh Khadan in Ketki Pada, an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the National Park.
According to the MFB, the two boys had fallen into a quarry with an estimated depth of 10 to 15 feet. Fire brigade personnel carried out a rescue operation and retrieved the bodies of the men from the water. They were rushed to BDBA Shatabdi Hospital for medical treatment, where Dr Mantri, the assistant medical officer (AMO), said that both the men were declared brought dead.
The deceased have been identified as Piyush Gupta and Om Ankush Singh.
Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the incident are awaited from the local police, according to the MFB.
