Mumbai: 11-foot Indian rock python rescued from Kalanagar near BKC

An 11-foot Indian rock python was rescued from near a slum pocket in the Kalanagar area near Bandra-Kurla Complex on Friday morning after it was found constricting and killing a cat.

The incident was reported to snake rescuer Atul Kamble of NGO WAPRA at around 8.38 am on September 18. According to Kamble, a resident spotted the python coiled around the cat and, distressed by the sight, contacted him for immediate assistance.

After receiving the call, Kamble alerted Forest Department Round Officer Deepak Gaikwad and the Thane-Mumbai Range Control Office before heading to the location.

Kamble said, "When we reached the location, the python had coiled itself around the cat and was constricting it. The cat was found dead."

Rescue operation executed taking necessary precautions

As the python was found close to a residential area, rescuers took precautions during the operation to ensure the safety of residents. The reptile was successfully rescued without causing it any injury.

Following the rescue, residents were informed about the presence of the snake and advised to clear objects and clutter around their homes that could provide potential hiding spots for snakes.

The Indian rock python, estimated to be around 11 feet long, will be released into its natural habitat in accordance with Forest Department guidelines and applicable regulations, Kamble said.
