The Central Railway staff, with the support of passengers, helped a pregnant woman safely deliver a baby boy aboard the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Dibrugarh Express while the train was travelling between Bhusaval and Itarsi on May 30, officials said.
The timely response by railway staff ensured the safety of both the mother and newborn before medical assistance was arranged at the next station.
According to Central Railway, the incident took place at around 5.25 pm when passenger Ravi Chaudhary approached Train Conductor S.P. Phirke and Train Ticket Examiner Ambreesh Kumar Tiwari for help.
He informed them that his wife, Jyoti, had gone into sudden labour and her condition was rapidly worsening.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the railway staff immediately began making arrangements to assist her.
The staff quickly prepared a clean and private area in the gallery of Coach B-6 using blankets and bedsheets.
At around 5.28 pm, railway officials contacted Bhopal Control and requested that medical assistance, including a doctor and ambulance, be arranged at Harda railway station.
Meanwhile, women passengers joined the railway staff in assisting the expectant mother.
At approximately 5.40 pm, while the train was still in motion, Jyoti safely delivered a healthy baby boy with the help of railway staff and fellow passengers.
Passengers in the coach welcomed the arrival of the newborn with relief and joy.
The train reached Harda station at 6.07 pm, where Railway Protection Force personnel, station staff, a woman constable and medical support teams were waiting.
As the umbilical cord had not yet been cut, the mother and baby were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment and care.
Railway officials confirmed that both mother and child are safe and in stable condition.
Central Railway praised the presence of mind, compassion and teamwork displayed by its staff during the emergency.
Officials said the incident reflects Indian Railways' commitment not only to transporting passengers safely but also to supporting them during unexpected situations and emergencies.
