A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus sustained damage after encountering an uneven section of road near Shivaji Nagar Junction in Mumbai on Friday afternoon, officials said, adding that no injuries were reported in the incident.
According to officials, bus no. 6830, operating on Route 404/33, was scheduled to depart from Shivaji Nagar for Ghatkopar Station (East) at 3.20 pm when the incident occurred while the vehicle was moving through traffic near the signal junction.
Officials said the road surface was uneven, causing the bus to experience a sudden jolt. As a result, the front bumper of the bus was damaged and the headlight assembly became detached and fell onto the road.
No collision with another vehicle was reported, they said.
The incident was immediately reported to the Tata Group's wet lease technical team. Maintenance personnel rushed to the spot and removed the damaged bumper before taking the bus to the depot for necessary repairs.
Officials said that they ensured that the damaged vehicle was removed safely and that traffic movement was not significantly affected.
To minimise inconvenience to commuters, BEST arranged a replacement vehicle. Bus No. 6729 was deployed as an alternative service and entered operation at 5.10 pm.
Officials said efforts were made to maintain continuity of service on the route despite the disruption.
BEST confirmed that no passengers, pedestrians or motorists were injured in the incident. Officials also clarified that the damage was not caused by any road accident or collision with another vehicle.
Further assessment of the damaged bus is being carried out at the depot.
Mumbai Police have served a notice to BEST bus driver Vikas Padare, 42, directing him to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the fatal Dadar Plaza bus crash after a preliminary inspection by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) ruled out any mechanical defect in the vehicle.
The notice was issued on Friday as investigators intensified their probe into the circumstances that led to the deadly accident.
According to officials, the RTO's preliminary inspection found no evidence of brake failure or any other mechanical malfunction in the BEST bus involved in the crash.
The findings contradict Padare's earlier statement to police, in which he claimed that the bus brakes had failed and that the vehicle continued moving for nearly five minutes despite his efforts to stop it.
With the possibility of a technical fault now ruled out, investigators are examining the driver's actions in the moments leading up to the accident.
