The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Thursday, August 13 concluded its search and rescue operation at the Kurla West landslide site after recovering eight bodies and evacuating four people.
The landslide was reported at around 3:38 am on August 12 at Garib Nawab Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Kurla West, with several people feared trapped under the debris.
Team 5F of the 5th Battalion NDRF, which had been pre-positioned at Ghatkopar for monsoon duty, was mobilised to the site along with its canine, K9 Jessy.
The team carried out systematic collapsed structure search and rescue (CSSR) operations and debris removal in coordination with the BMC and Mumbai Fire Brigade.
A total of eight bodies were recovered, including six by the NDRF. The six bodies recovered by the NDRF comprised three men, one woman, one male child and one female child.
According to the NDRF's final update, four people were evacuated, taking the total number of people accounted for to 12.
The NDRF said its CSSR search and recovery operation was closed at 1:25 pm on August 13 in consultation with the civil administration.
The search and rescue operations continued for days at the site of a landslide in Mumbai, where two people were feared trapped under the debris.
The landslide struck a row of tenements near a hillock in the Kurla area in the early hours of Wednesday following heavy rains. The incident claimed seven lives and left seven others injured.
The rescue effort was complicated by the location of the landslide and the narrow access route leading to the affected area. The restricted access has also limited the use of heavy machinery, forcing rescue teams to work carefully while clearing the debris.
