The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday announced the launch of a city-wide cleanliness competition titled ‘Mumbai Clean League' after Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar proposed for the initiative.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging active participation from citizens as well as various establishments to improve cleanliness standards across Mumbai.

The idea for the competition was proposed by actor Akshay Kumar, who said it was inspired by the format of the Indian Premier League (IPL), reported the PTI.

He shared the concept with civic officials a few months ago, and expressed satisfaction that the plan has now been implemented with proper arrangements.

The announcement was made at a press conference held at the BMC headquarters by Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi, Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde, and BJP leader Ameet Satam.

Competition details and participation

The competition has begun immediately and will run until December. It is open to a wide range of participants, including housing societies, schools, slum areas, hotels, gardens, public toilets and other establishments in Mumbai.

Participants will compete under different categories based on cleanliness and maintenance.

Wide range of competition categories

In a post on X, the BMC announced that the ‘Mumbai Clean League' will cover multiple categories to ensure participation from all sections of society.

These include -

- Clean administrative divisions (corporator group and ward level)

- Clean residential complexes

- Clean slum areas

- Clean commercial establishments

- Clean hospitals (government and private)

- Clean restaurants

- Clean community toilets

- Clean gardens and open spaces

- Clean roads and streets and

- Clean market areas

Transparent evaluation and incentives

According to Gagrani, each participant will receive a QR code for monitoring and evaluation. The process will be transparent, with assessments carried out by a Central government body, as per the PTI.

Winners in various categories will receive awards and may also be considered for concessions on property tax. The solid waste management department will oversee the entire process.

Call for public participation

Gagrani stressed that improving Mumbai's cleanliness requires large-scale public involvement. He noted that civic efforts alone are not sufficient without citizen participation, according to the PTI.

Akshay Kumar also urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness, saying that the initiative could bring significant change if people actively contribute.

Responding to a question on the reported gas cylinder shortage, Akshay Kumar mentioned that his household had ordered induction-based appliances as an alternative, though he was unsure if they had been delivered, the news agency reported.
