The car fire inside Mumbai's Coastal Road tunnel on Wednesday has once again drawn attention to the city's recurring safety and infrastructure challenges.
The latest incident occurred on Wednesday, July 15, when a moving car caught fire inside the Mumbai Coastal Road tunnel, leading to panic among motorists and causing significant traffic congestion.
While no injuries were reported, eyewitnesses described scenes of commuters abandoning vehicles and rushing towards tunnel exits as emergency services responded to the blaze.

On December 30, 2025, a three-vehicle collision on Mumbai's Coastal Road left a passenger travelling in a Mercedes injured, police said. The incident drew widespread attention after videos of the crash surfaced on social media.
According to officials, the accident occurred when two taxis struck the luxury vehicle from behind in quick succession.
The force of the impact caused one of the cabs to overturn, while the Mercedes veered off course and crashed into a road divider.

On November 7, 2025, the Worli Police arrested three individuals, including a civil supervisor associated with the Mumbai Coastal Road project, for allegedly stealing nearly 150 kg of iron-concrete blocks from the project site.
According to the police, the main accused, Robin Kumar Vishnu Singh (27), was employed as a civil supervisor with a private contractor engaged by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the Coastal Road project.
Investigators said Singh initially filed a complaint reporting the theft of scrap material from the site.
However, during the investigation, the police allegedly discovered that Singh himself had orchestrated the theft. He was subsequently arrested along with Prakash Ledo Mahto (35), a driver, and Kumaluddin Khan (38), a scrap dealer, who allegedly assisted in transporting and disposing of the stolen material.
The Police said the accused were booked following inquiries into the disappearance of construction material from the project site. Read more.
On October 22, 2025, a BMW allegedly overturned inside a tunnel on Mumbai's Coastal Road, causing temporary traffic disruptions on the route.
The accident occurred on the southbound carriageway near Tardeo. While the vehicle overturned inside the tunnel, no injuries were reported in the incident.

The accident took place around 9 pm near Worli when the red SUV, travelling towards the area, allegedly lost control and rammed into the right-side wall of the tunnel.

On October 7, 2025, a speeding Ertiga plunged nearly 30 feet into the Arabian Sea after losing control along the Worli stretch of Mumbai's Coastal Road.
According to authorities, the vehicle crashed through a divider before going airborne and falling into the sea. The accident occurred during a late-night drive and could have resulted in a major tragedy.

In September 2025, two people sustained minor injuries in a collision involving two cars on Mumbai's Coastal Road.
According to police, the accident occurred when a Swift allegedly rammed into a Kia while attempting to overtake it. The Kia, driven by 53-year-old Vinod Kumar Upadhyay of Kurla West, was plying from Marine Drive towards Bandra with the vehicle's owner, Tajuddin, on board.
Officials said the crash took place near a curve where the Kia had slowed down. At the same time, a Swift driven by 20-year-old Vivek Rambabu Sainik, a resident of Fort, allegedly attempted to overtake the vehicle but failed to maintain a safe distance, colliding with it from behind.

On September 10, 2025, a 52-year-old head constable attached to the Worli Police Station was killed and another police personnel sustained serious injuries after a speeding car allegedly rammed into them near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link-Coastal Road connector.
The two officers were deployed on VIP security duty at the time of the incident. Police said the vehicle struck them while they were stationed along the route, leading to the fatal accident.
