Western Railway on Sunday said that it has completed a major phase of construction for a new 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Marine Lines station.
A total of 19 steel girders, each measuring 20 metres in length and weighing a combined 95 metric tonnes, were successfully launched at the station, officials said.
The project is part of station improvement works under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).
The work was carried out during a scheduled overnight traffic and power block on the night of May 30-31, 2026
The operation marks an important milestone in the construction of the new passenger footbridge, which is expected to improve connectivity and ease movement for commuters at the busy station, the officials said.
The Western Railway carried out the work during a three-hour traffic and power block covering all railway lines.
The block was in effect from 1.22 am to 4.15 am and was completed on schedule without affecting planned operations.
Officials confirmed that the block was cleared on time after the successful completion of the girder-launching activity.
To carry out the operation safely and efficiently, railway authorities deployed two 500-tonne cranes, two hydra cranes and one tower wagon.
The specialised equipment was used to position and install the large steel girders during the overnight engineering work.
Earlier, the Western Railway, while sharing Mumbai local train updates, on Friday had said that it will undertake a major night block at Marine Lines station during the intervening night of May 30 and 31, officials said.
They said that the block will be undertaken for the launching of Foot Over Bridge (FOB) girders using a road crane.
According to an official statement, the block will affect all railway lines at Marine Lines station between 1:15 am and 4:15 am. Due to the work, several suburban train services will remain cancelled or partially cancelled.
A total workforce of 60 personnel participated in the operation, including 20 railway staff members and 40 contractor personnel.
The coordinated effort ensured the successful execution of the project within the allotted time frame.
The new foot over bridge forms part of the ongoing station redevelopment and passenger amenity enhancement works being undertaken at Marine Lines station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Once completed, the wider bridge is expected to provide improved passenger circulation, reduce congestion and enhance commuter safety at the station.
