A 50-year-old man was seriously injured after a roadside tree branch fell on him in Mumbai's Andheri East area on Wednesday morning amid heavy rainfall, civic officials said.
The incident occurred at around 10:12 am on July 8 near D J House on Nagardas Road, close to the Andheri subway. According to officials, the tree branch fell on pedestrian Aadesh Gaikar, leaving him injured.
The incident has once again raised concerns over tree-related accidents in the city during the ongoing monsoon season.
Following the incident, Gaikar was immediately taken to the civic-run Cooper Hospital for medical treatment.
According to information provided by Dr Shirale, Assistant Medical Officer at Cooper Hospital, the 50-year-old was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining injuries.
Officials said Gaikar's condition is currently stable and he remains under medical observation.
Soon after the incident was reported, emergency response teams were deployed at the location to clear the fallen branch and ensure public safety.
Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Garden Department, police and power distributor BEST reached the spot and carried out clearance operations.
Officials said necessary steps were taken to remove the obstruction and prevent further risks to pedestrians and motorists in the area.
The latest incident comes at a time when Mumbai has been witnessing several tree and branch collapse incidents due to heavy rainfall and strong winds during the monsoon.
Over the past few days, three people, including an 11-year-old boy, have died in tree-related incidents across the city, according to officials.
Such incidents have highlighted concerns regarding the safety of roadside trees, regular inspections and preventive measures during the rainy season.
Civic authorities regularly conduct inspections and trimming of trees considered vulnerable before and during the monsoon period. However, continuous rainfall and changing weather conditions can increase the risk of branches falling unexpectedly.
Officials have urged citizens to remain cautious while travelling during periods of heavy rainfall, especially near old trees and areas prone to waterlogging.
