Central Railway commuters have been urged to check train updates before travelling during the evening rush hour on Monday, as services remained disrupted following two incidents reported on the suburban network earlier in the day. According to updates available, services in the up direction were yet to be restored to normal, while down-direction trains were running behind schedule.
Central Railway suburban services were disrupted on Monday morning after a signal failure at Kanjurmarg and an overhead equipment (OHE) issue between Thane and Mulund affected train movements.
The incidents led to train bunching and services running behind schedule, inconveniencing commuters travelling on the busy Central Railway suburban network.
Commuters reported prolonged delays, trains halting between stations and a lack of announcements, triggering angry reactions on social media, with passengers criticising railway authorities over the disruption and the lack of timely information.
Central Railway CPRO Swapnil Nila says, "Restoration work on the OHE issue began at 10 am and was completed by 10.48 am. Another failure, caused by a fire at Kanjurmarg station, affected the railway's signalling and communication systems, resulting in blank signals between Bhandup and Vikhroli. Efforts are underway to restore train services, with trains being operated under special safety procedures, including A-board authority and absolute block working. We have already started operating trains on the down track and are working to resume services on the up track as soon as possible."
According to an update from Central Railway's Mumbai Division, all lines at Kanjurmarg (KJRD) were reported down at around 9.30 am, with signals going blank. The incident was reported by the Station Control Operations Room (SCOR).
The disruption affected signals at Kanjurmarg and on the section between Vikhroli (VK) and Bhandup (BND). Railway personnel introduced alternative operating procedures to regulate train movements and maintain safety while efforts to address the problem continued.
Trains were being operated under A-board authority at Kanjurmarg and between Vikhroli and Bhandup. The fifth and sixth lines between the two stations were also operating under A-board authority.
Absolute block working was introduced between Vikhroli and Bhandup for down local and down through services, and between Bhandup and Vikhroli for up local and up through services. Trains were also authorised to operate under TD 912 authority.
The disruption resulted in delays and bunching of local trains, leaving commuters frustrated during the morning rush. Several passengers took to X to complain about trains being held between stations, the lack of announcements and the impact on their work schedules.
"You guys have zero empathy towards local commuters. Why didn't you stop the trains at some railway station. Atleast, people could have tried some alternatives. You have stopped trains in middle of nowhere and there seems to be no urgency in resolving any issue," one user on X said.
Another commuter said passengers had been stranded for hours without receiving information about the disruption.
"Behind Schedule. People are stranded for 2 hrs in train. Is this just behind schedule?? No announcement in train at all," the user said.
A third commuter described the impact on their work commitments after being stuck between Mulund and Nahur.
"Because of this I missed important office meeting ⦠was stuck in between Mulund and Nahur .. Everyday central railway late and all these issues ⦠Seriously Frustrating ..," the commuter said.
