A 47-year-old man sustained severe head injuries after a tree branch fell on him near the Andheri subway on Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified as Aadesh Gaikar, a resident of Virar East, underwent emergency brain surgery and remains in critical condition.
According to the Andheri police, the incident took place around 8.50 am when Gaikar was walking towards his office with his friend after getting down at Andheri station.
The duo was near the Andheri subway when a tree branch suddenly snapped and crashed onto Gaikar, damaging his umbrella and striking his head. He collapsed on the road following the impact.
A police official said a mobile patrol unit stationed nearby immediately responded and rushed Gaikar to Cooper Hospital for treatment.
Doctors performed an emergency brain surgery, and Gaikar is currently under observation in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). His condition remains critical, and he is being closely monitored.
Gaikar is the sole breadwinner of his family and supports his wife, two school-going children and his ailing mother.
Pradeep Wengurlekar, Gaikar's longtime friend who witnessed the incident, said, "I was just a few steps ahead when the branch suddenly came crashing down. It broke his umbrella and hit him on the head. Before I could react, he was lying on the road bleeding. Bystanders helped us while a nearby police vehicle rushed him to Cooper Hospital."
Gaikar's wife Apeksha said he had resumed work after a two-day break due to the bad weather.
"He left home around 7 am after I prepared his dabba. I was informed around 10 am about the incident. Doctors have done a brain surgery and he is not responding as of now. They have told us that he should gain consciousness in the next 24 hours," she said.
