The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and the Konkan region, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy spells at isolated places on Sunday as the active monsoon phase intensifies across Maharashtra.

In its weather bulletin issued at 1.12 pm on Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai, said widespread rainfall activity is expected across the state over the next few days, with the highest intensity likely over the Konkan region and adjoining ghat areas.

On Monday, the rainfall intensity is expected to ease, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. However, Raigad will continue to remain under a red alert. The rainfall activity is likely to weaken further in Mumbai and Thane on Tuesday.

Ghats of Maharashtra also on red alert

The IMD has also issued a red alert for the ghat areas of Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara districts, while the ghat areas of Nashik have been placed under an orange alert for Sunday. The weather bureau has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy spells at isolated places.

Thunderstorms likely in north Maharashtra, Marathwada

North Maharashtra districts, including Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, and Nashik, are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and light to moderate rainfall at isolated places. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated locations in Nashik district.

In Marathwada, districts such as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, and Beed are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, with isolated heavy spells likely in some areas.

Heavy rainfall forecast for parts of Vidarbha

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts on Sunday and Monday.

Other districts, including Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Wardha, and Yavatmal, are likely to experience thunderstorms, gusty winds and light to moderate rainfall.

The weather department said the probability of widespread rainfall activity remains "very likely" across most districts of Maharashtra over the next few days.

Waterlogging, flash floods, and rough sea conditions likely

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall may lead to urban flooding and waterlogging in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and other cities, while flash floods are possible in low-lying areas and ghat regions.

The department has also warned of possible disruption to road and rail traffic, including Mumbai's suburban railway services, landslides in hilly terrain, damage to standing crops and weak structures, and risks posed by lightning and gusty winds. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough along the Konkan coast.

The IMD has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, refrain from taking shelter under trees or weak structures during thunderstorms, and follow advisories issued by local authorities. Farmers have been advised to harvest mature crops, ensure proper field drainage and keep livestock in safe shelters, while fishermen and coastal residents have been asked to closely monitor sea conditions.
